Corporate Idolatry

"Corporate Idolatry" by Helena Hawkins - blindfolded person trying to break free from chains

We are offering ourselves
On the altars of corporate idols
We are the sheep being slaughtered
Led astray by the big lie
This self-sacrificial rat race
Of skipping kids’ birthdays
And chasing after the green
We pretend to be self-righteous
While we bite our nails till they bleed
And drink until oblivion
Suicides are normal
Mass murders shrugged off
Nobody says anything,
We just avoid eye contact
We’re too busy
Feigning personalities over text
Faking our wit and flavor
When truly, our lives are blanched
We are mere slaves in Egypt
The shackle digging into our foot
Strangling our necks
We’re lying to you
Telling you it’s all worth it
But cancer eats away our insides
As we cheer at the foot
Of the great, greedy idol
Barely flinching when children
Are torn apart limb from limb
There is nothing new under the sun
We are the idol worshippers
Of days of yore
