Sunset

Sunset

The sun dances a gentle lilac
lending its glow to cashmere clouds
the birds wind in lazy spirals
and the world of this block hums a lullaby as it lays down to rest

the final cars slide across the pavement
they could go as fast as they’d like
but the road is quiet
save for a song rising upward
from the synagogue on the corner
singing welcome, welcome my love
come, come stay awhile with us
don’t leave too soon
where else is there to go?
