Steady Lights and Burning Stars

Steady Lights and Burning Stars

I walked beneath a velvet sky
The twinkling stars looked down from high
When from the corner of my eye
I saw a light begin to glow

I turned my head and from afar
I saw a sparking, flickering star
The perfect stillness did it mar
The star began to grow and grow

It swelled and cried out angrily
And brimmed with pulsing energy,
A star that stretched its boundary
And shattered it to pieces small

It splintered sparks and hurled them straight
Against a darkness fuelled by hate
I wonder if it knew the fate
To which it was about to fall

The other stars just looked on by-
And no, I couldn’t tell you why –
For in my eyes, this burning star
Was drawing from a blistering heart

But still it battled to the last
The shadows that were closing fast
Till with a silent, echoing BANG
It blew itself apart

The fragments flew and lit the fray
Dispelling shadows far away
The night sky burned as bright as day
– Yet those who saw were very few

A star tied up with boundless love
Constricted to the sky above
Whose spirit, like a fleeting dove
Away to distant heavens flew

When all fades out, what’s left to show?
It seems for nought the star did grow
But standing on the ground below
I saw the burning star, and knew

How marvellous a sight to see!
That such a piercing light could be
And yet exists inside of me!
To reach for this I truly yearn

The memory, for all it’s worth
Screams silently above the earth
But legacies are given birth
And teach to all who wish to learn

And though we need our steady lights
To bring peace and hope to the lonely nights
Each one must ask himself, in turn:
How brightly will I choose to burn?
