Words to a Brother, Forgiven

Words to a Brother, Forgiven (poem): Masada ruins
Photo: Shai Reef

One thousand ships, with sails bleached
white as the bones left in
their wake, their coming a
snarling typhoon
Six eyes, sunken to the pit,
glittering in a maelstrom of greed,
of bloodlust, of
the ram and his brother
horns locked and homes shattered

Was it because of a woman?
What hole in the heart brings upon
its own the breaking of one hundred thousand
spines?
That robs the stars from their peoples,
that flaunts with such arrogance that
the moon herself turns her face?

What savage dog, whore of your mountains
you have become, Esav.
Brother, friend, how deep is your sorrow?
How unforgivable your crimes?
You illicit paradox, you cur of history.
To rise so high, only to be brought
to the heel of the G-d of your fathers.
Yet, when your head rolled into their
cave, its hollow cheeks
were wet with tears

May the hands of Rome be broken
Your wings clipped
Your nest aflame.

And may you learn to love again.
