Patchwork Babel

Patchwork Babel - Tower of Babylon

I’ve seen your face and wandering body
spread across the vacant sky
I’ve lost so many wills to live wondering how I passed you by
I found in a heartbeat happenstance
reasons to keep forging on
But by and large I can’t explain just what is going on

And maybe it’s okay to sleep and sleep perchance to dream
But as I lay here wide awake my heart begins to scream:

Each barren household fraught with dust
and nights too dark to fill
With trembling light, a burning cusp
Between void and ink-less quill

I saw a burning city on the road to Bethlehem
and David’s lyre crying as the blood flowed red from Shkhem

Shimon and Levi pacing, our swords drawn and flashing bright
Yet forgetting where we came from forsaking dues we owe outright

Our leaders sit content as cats behind
rich and riddled desks
swearing by the life of Pharaoh
to lay our haunted souls to rest
in beds of silk and purple made in sweatshops to the East
and feed us fish and onions stolen from the river beasts

And as the tower crumbles,
bricks cascading to the ground
every breathing body goes to war against themselves

We rush screaming at each other with no ear to hear the cry
of those we trod upon and
leave there in the mud to die

But feel the deep earth tremble
watch the fortress as it sways
Babylon is falling
the moon shines bright as day

And in this age of looming idols
a simple question strikes a nerve
If every act is one of worship
Then who is it that you serve?
