Vows

Vows (poem) - Jungle on a foggy day
pexels.com

When your mind is barren
and your heart is burst
and all the promises you made to the glow
of embers in your hearth
turn to smoke
I will be for you

When the ocean calls
and the breakers of the sea rip
tempest around your waist
when the depth beckons,
giggles, and twists its weeds
around your ankles
and the light in your eyes is
swallowed by the bottoms of the
mountains
I will say your name

If still life on earth is active hell
and all dreams of heaven have
dissolved at the bottom of your cup
and all scents of paradise have
passed, carried out through your
window by the gale
I will strike a match

When the ground itself
seems to sink
pulling steadily, greedily
at your shoes
and every vine you grab
is another snake
I will tear the jungle to shreds

And when lightning surges down,
drawn by your tears to
cry havoc
and shear you into two, perfect
halves
and the walls of your garden
crumble before the static of your
soul
Though your gaze cannot be
broken
I will be your tree

I don’t believe in an indifferent
universe, only indifferent people.

and I will always believe in you.
