The Fight for Our Humanity

The Fight for Our Humanity

We will never be human to them
We are too different
Too difficult
Too unique
Too rich
Too poor
Too powerful
Too weak
Too accepting
Too insular
Too oppressive
Too open
Too religious
Too assimilated
Too purist
Too satanic
Too middle eastern
Too white
Too savage
Too meek

But so too is humanity all of those things
We have never not been human

The struggle is our own
To define humanity in our own terms
To determine our own moral boundaries and react accordingly when they are crossed
To keep our own souls and bodies intact while being denied safety or understanding and seeking solace with our Creator
To learn how to use power responsibility when there is no good example of how to do so
To try and become that example
To not dehumanize our own – to not dehumanize even our enemies

In a world of dehumanization we forget humanity is messy
A collection of righteous acts and evil deeds
A plethora of cultures and races each with their own moral failings
Isn’t the job of a Jew to remind the world we all come from One and we are one ourselves?

Maybe the world cannot hear this right now,
But isn’t our responsibility to remember it when they cannot?
O children of Israel
Do not neglect the difficult tasks that lie ahead of us on this treacherous road to redemption
Remember your inheritance to be a Light unto this broken world
Do not shirk your duty to self reflect and make hard changes
We cannot avoid the clash of civilizations
The collapse of the structures holding up our world inches closer each day
Our ancestors left the tools to rebuild in our hands
The only path forward is to rise to the challenge
