Living Waters

Living Waters poem: olives on a tree

Master of the Universe,
as the moon you have made us
The wax and wane of eternal tides
To run your course, seek your bounty
The hunter wild in a field of dreams
Drenched cobalt, bleeding gold
To grasp vermillion by its horns
A tamed stag to ornament your House

As the almond tree you have made us
Lord of the depths
To bloom in perfumed air, the wafting myrrh of Zion
Sweet and dark
To breath deeply from your wellsprings
Enough to swell the moon

To fight with angels you have made us
Behind the mask
From within the shadows, bound in the scent of parchment, the musk of ink
The ichor of your enemies, the tears of your sons
Shedding light
The steps of men irradiated
Ecstatic
As the blind one scents the almonds in the moonlight

Lord of Hosts,
Breaker of Chains,
starcasters you have made us
To surge from height and depth
Run, return, to run again at your smile
And present your cup,
The blood of Egypt, a sign,
a blessing
The prodigal bows his head at the gates,
Emerald, you have cupped our chins
Raised the gaze of the smitten
To tear the stars into shreds,
smelt the bonds of angels,
the children of freedom lock eyes with the freed
To dance and exult in your almond groves
The moon as bright as the sun
