Israel’s 2019 election results came as a surprise to many, with some parties failing to pass the electoral threshold after polling strong and others far surpassing their expected number of votes. Likud party leader Binyamin Netanyahu was tasked by President Reuven Rivlin with forming a governing coalition.
But the question remains whether Netanyahu intends to form a government with his “natural partners” in the national camp or to partner with Blue & White in an effort to ease Israel’s acceptance of Donald Trump’s new closely guarded plan for the Middle East.
Last week, Netanyahu requested and received a 14-day extension to complete the task of building his coalition. While this isn’t particularly newsworthy – many previous prime ministers have requested extensions – there may be a reason at play beyond typical inter-party negotiations now delaying the creation of a new government.
Political analyst Mordechai Taub joins a special bonus episode of The Next Stage to talk about the recent elections, how Israelis voted, and what coalition may be formed in the 21st Knesset.
