Rather than take Trump’s controversial statements at face value, we should explore what they might actually be meant to achieve for his broader agenda.

While it’s certainly possible that Trump intends to remove the Palestinian population from Gaza, it’s far more likely that the president’s statements were intended to achieve other political objectives.
We should be careful not to reduce our understanding of the Disengagement to a mere humanitarian crisis for displaced Jews.
Israel’s national camp must learn to appreciate the contradictions between the interests of a waning empire & those of an ancient people still in the process of experiencing a national rebirth.
Trump is pursuing what he sees to be US interests in our region. If these clash with the interests of Israelis or Palestinians, things could get ugly.
Resisting Trump’s plan to rule Gaza would go a long way in advancing Israel’s psychological liberation.
Even if we entertain the notion that Trump is a true friend to Israel, we’d still have to ask what US policy in Gaza would look like in the post-Trump era.
